Spinal Center Support

With funding from the South African government, AMM developed the Spinal Center in order to better meet the needs of the many patients in the region suffering from traumatic paraplegia and quadriplegia from motor vehicle accidents, gun shot wounds, and stabbing, as well as those affected by tuberculosis of the spine.

The Spinal Center allows the hospital to provide acute and sub-acute care for patients, but there are few long-term spinal cord injury beds, and many patients with paralysis die of complications associated with their neurological injuries after discharge from the hospital.

The shortage of qualified nurses also limits the number of outpatients the center can see. and the center is operating below capacity in terms of patients seen.

With help from the Spinal Center, patients (mostly young men) with paraplegia and quadriplegia can return to their homes and participate more fully in life.

But Spinal Center needs support in order to attract and train qualified staff and operate at full capacity.
